The local branch of Contact the Elderly, a national organisation solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people, are inviting people from around Clackmannanshire to join their group of tea party goers and volunteers.

Loneliness and isolation can have a detrimental effect on health and welfare, according to research cited by the charity being lonely or isolated can impact on blood pressure and is closely linked to depression and higher rates of mortality.

The charity aims to change the lives of lonely people above 75, who often tend to spend the majority of their days alone. Members meet one Sunday afternoon a month in small local groups for an afternoon tea, home baked cakes and biscuits and a chance to make new connections. They are supported by a group of volunteer organisers and drivers who make sure everyone gets there and home safely. The organisers take turns hosting the social gatherings, so each time it is something a bit new and different.

The local branch has twelve regular members, the oldest person is 91-years-old, according to local branch co-ordinator Dorothy Anderson, who has been volunteering with the organisation for over 20 years, all the members love taking the chance to come out and make connections. The food is all home baking and usually there is so much that “you can’t eat anything before you go and you can’t eat anything when you come back.” The charity offers its services for free. Anyone who may wish to become a member or a volunteer should contact Morna O’May on 01786871264 or at morna.omay@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
