FOUR Alloa teenagers have been treated for burns following an incident at a garden bonfire last weekend.

One of the youngsters sustained burns across 33 per cent of his body after flammable liquid was poured onto the home-made fire.

Emergency services say the incident gave the teens a ‘shock’ and fire chiefs have issued warnings over using volatile materials around open fires.

The four victims, aged 14-17, suffered a variety of injuries to their faces and feet as a result of the incident.

They were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert by paramedics with the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Three of the youngsters are believed to have been released, while the 17-year-old who suffered burns on a third of his body was kept in for further treatment.

His condition has been described as stable by the authorities.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) also attended the incident, which took place at Coats Crescent in Alloa at around 9.30pm on Friday night.

The incident has prompted warnings from the emergency services with parents being urged to keep flammable materials away from children and young adults.

Andy Bennett, Alloa fire station manager, said: “We would encourage parents to remind their children about the danger associated with flammable liquids and that substances such as these are clearly marked and kept well out of the reach of youngsters.

“Fuels and other accelerants are extremely dangerous and should not be used irresponsibly, particularly around fire.

“These youngsters got a real shock. They had no idea just how volatile these liquids were and how dangerous they can be.” A spokesman for the fire service added: “SFRS is reminding parents to ensure all flammable liquids are clearly marked and kept out of the reach of children after an incident in Alloa over the weekend.” Police Scotland say they will continue their investigations into the incident but it is believed that there was no criminal element to the accident.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Police in Alloa were called to an address in Coats Crescent following reports that a 17-year-old man had sustained serious burns.

“The incident occurred last Friday (10 April) at around 9.30pm.

“The Scottish Ambulance Service took the 17-year-old to Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

“However, he has since been transferred to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he continues to be treated. His condition is described as stable.

“Enquiries into the full circumstances of this incident are currently ongoing.”
