A new charity shop opened on Alloa’s High Street last week.

Provost Tina Murphy officially opened Strathcarron Hospice’s new charity shop on Wednesday (15 April) before a generous crowd flooded in to grab a bargain.

All proceeds from the shop will go towards the Denny hospice, which requires £10,500 a day to operate.

David Rennie, area manager at the hospice, and manager of the new store, Helen McLachlan, told the Advertiser that they were delighted that the shop was now open.

David said: “This new shop is probably one of our largest ones. We have a full selection of donated goods lady’s wear, men’s wear, children’s wear, CDs, DVDs and bric-a-brac.

“I’m very pleased with our new volunteers. They were very quick to chap on the door after we had a notice in the window. They are giving their time from several hours a day to several days a week.” The shop has half a dozen volunteers at the moment and David said more help is always needed.

After opening the new store, Provost Tina Murphy told the Advertiser: “I think there can’t be very many families who haven’t been affected by either cancer or some sort of other life threatening disease and need to use the facility at Strathcarron so I am delighted to see [the charity shop] here in Alloa.

“I am sure it will be well-supported both by the public and by the volunteers. There are a whole lot of first-time volunteers here. They are all keen and ready to go.

“Every charity is desperate for the support of the people, it is hard times financially for everybody, so come in, get a bargain knowing that you are helping to support the charity you want to support.” To volunteer or donate to the new shop, simply drop-in to the High Street store or call them on 01259 211356.
