Staff at Alloa’s Yorkshire Building Society is brewing up to mark a successful year of fundraising for Marie Curie.

The society’s Hour of Need campaign has managed to raise £300,000 in its first year across the society’s offices. The High Street branch has collected £570 for the charity and a cream tea party is being held today (Wednesday 24 June) to raise more.

Paul Scott, manager of the Alloa branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “The Hour of Need campaign is having a real impact on terminally ill people and their families in providing Marie Curie nursing support.

“This is the society’s most successful ever national fundraising campaign and this is all thanks to the commitment that our colleagues and members have shown in helping to raise £300,000 for Marie Curie.” Celebrating a year of fundraising, staff across the country will also be attempting the set a new Guinness World Records title for the largest cream tea party in multiple venues.

This challenge will be held tomorrow (Thursday 25 June), the target to beat is 536 participants and the society hopes that over 650 colleagues will take part simultaneously.

The tea party is generously backed by the Cream Tea Society and jam manufacturer Tiptree, who donated 15,000 portions of strawberry jam to the organisation’s 230 branches.
