An Alloa Forth Valley College student’s thought provoking art piece attracted many visitors at a recent showcase at the college’s Stirling Campus.

HND Contemporary Fine Art student Nathan Brown and his fellow final year college-goers were exhibiting a range of impressive art, design, media and sound production creations at the college’s Degree and Diploma Show two weeks ago.

Nathan, who is now progressing on for a BA in Art and Design with the college, showed-off his eye-catching installation, titled in Arabic and translated to English as ‘Life’, at the reception of the campus.

The 23-year-old was moved by the plight of the people trying to migrate to Europe from North Africa. The work consisted of an upturned boat with clothing and human belongings scattered across the floor.

He explained: “I have been watching the plight of these people on the news over the last few months and was moved to create this piece of art.

“I hope it made the people who visited the exhibition stop and think a little bit about what is happening in the Mediterranean right now.

“I have had some really positive feedback on my ‘Life’ installation and producing thought provoking artwork is something that really appeals to me and I hope to do more of this sort of thing in the future.” The exhibition also formed part of the Forth Valley Open Studios 2015 events and students from BA Art and Design, HND Contemporary Art Practice, HND Visual Communication and HND Art and Design courses were involved.

Steph Toms, curriculum manager at the college’s Creative Industries Department, said: “Once again, we are delighted with the high standard of work our students have produced for the end of year Degree and Diploma Show.

“The exhibition has been consistently busy since it launched on Friday, 5 June, and the feedback we have had from visitors has been very positive.

“This year in particular there has been a lot of interest from industry professionals and several of our students have been offered employment opportunities and many have secured places at prestigious higher education institutions.”
