A NEW president for the Rotary Club of Alloa has been appointed.

Hector Nicolson has presided over his last official engagements – completing a full year in office – and handed over the presidential chain to Iain Ballantine.

He said it had been an “absolute pleasure” to be afforded the opportunity of being president of a club in such a global organisation.

He added: “I have no doubt that president Iain will drive the club forward and continue to make The Rotary Club of Alloa an innovative club which is recognised locally, nationally and internationally.

“During my 12 months as president, the committed club members have raised a considerable amount of money which has been dispersed to several worthy causes, locally and internationally. Some of this money has already been used to provide shelter to Nepalese families following the devastating earthquake in their country.

“The several fund-raising activities is quite an achievement by dedicated Rotarians working in a caring community which Clackmannanshire undoubtedly is.

“I would like to take this opportunity of thanking fellow Rotarians, the local public schools, Alloa Academy Interact Club, Clackmannanshire Council and the several business organisations for their wholehearted support.

“I also thank the Alloa Advertiser for publicising the Rotary Club’s various activities. I acknowledge that without this support, the Rotary Club of Alloa would be unable to operate as such a successful organisation.” Incoming president, Iain has also congratulated Hector on his very successful year and is looking forward to carrying on his good work.

Iain qualified as a teacher in 1974 and taught biology in Glasgow, Larbert, Peru, Jordan and Orkney.

He was appointed head teacher of Kirkwall Grammar School in 1999 and retired in 2010.

He was vice president of the Rotary Club of Orkney before returning to Alva and joining the Rotary Club of Alloa.

Iain is married to Sandra who works as a Learning Assistant in the EASN and ASN departments of Alloa Academy.

The Rotary Club of Alloa is always seeking to increase its membership.

Members can be male or female and full or, if preferred, associate membership, is now offered.
