An elderly lady’s purse was stolen at a charity shop on Alloa’s High Street last week.

The purse was stolen from the 87-year-old woman’s handbag last Friday (10 July) at around 2pm, when she was shopping.

A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: “Don’t make it easy for the thief by leaving purses and other valuable property in clear view in bags or trolleys.

“Ensure your property is secured and hidden away. Only carry the necessary money you require and try not to advertise your property or purse to the thief and with the latter by letting them know how much money you are carrying, particularly when paying for items.

“If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of this type of crime, contact the police immediately and also remember to cancel all credit and debit cards with the relevant issuing banks as soon as possible.” Police are searching for a male, wearing a tan coloured top, who may have been the culprit.

According to police, this type of crime is becoming more common and the force is advising shoppers to take every precaution to reduce the chance of their handbags and purses being stolen.

Bags should be kept closed and placed at the front of the owner’s body. Shoppers should not take more money than needed. Expensive items should be left home, rather than carried in a purse or handbag.

Purses should only be taken out when necessary, paying for items or when taking cash from an ATM.
