Emergency services are responding to a fire on Alloa's Mar Place.

A number of Scottish Fire & Rescue Service appliances have been sent to the scene and the road has been blocked off as firefighters are tackling the blaze.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The emergency services are currently dealing with a fire in Mar Place, Alloa at its junction with Kellie Place.

"At this time, both roads have been completely shut off to the general public and traffic alike. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, however for the time being, could you oblige and use an alternative route to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident safely.

"Your assistance would be greatly appreciated."

It is the Advertiser's understanding that the building on fire is Greenfield Stores, where props for Alloa Town Hall shows are stored.

The fire has now been tackled, but the road remains closed as crews are still at the scene of the industrial premises.

Scottish Fire & Rescue Control initially received a call of the "well-developed" fire within the storage depot at 12.27pm.

Appliances from Alloa, Tillicoultry, Stirling, the water carrier from Larbert and an Aerial Ladder Platform from Falkirk as well as a support appliance all attended the scene.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus used three hose reel jets and two main jets to tackle the blaze. The roof of the building collapsed shortly after the crews arrived.

The fire has now been brought under control and crews are dampening the area down.

Group manager Gordon Pryde, who is at the scene, said: "When the crews arrived the building was well-alight and fire had spread to the roof.

“The crews turned up very quickly, accessed the building and worked hard to extinguish the fire.

“We are now checking for any fire spread and will extinguish the fire within collapsed areas, when it is deemed safe to enter the affected area.” He added: “Half of the building has been saved but half if completely destroyed. There were a lot of costumes in the building, the material of which is highly flammable.” Scottish Fire & Rescue Service's Fire Investigation Unit has also been requested at the scene and a joint investigation into the incident will take place with Police Scotland.
