Over 100 families from Clackmannanshire celebrated the opening of the new Play & Social Centre of the charity Play Alloa on Sunday (16 August).

The new centre for children and young adults with disabilities was officially opened by MSP Keith Brown at the former Broad Street Nursery building in town.

The centre includes a bright and modern space for play and activities, a large open garden, a parent information base, a toddler playroom, offices and a training room.

The MSP said: “Initially founded by parents for their children who felt isolated from usual play situations, Play Alloa now employs over 20 staff, has a large number of volunteers and provides a quality service to over 140 families across Clackmannanshire and beyond.

“Firstly as a councillor, and for the last nine years as the local MSP, it has been great to see Play Alloa expand, grow and develop what has come to be such a valued service to the people of Clackmannanshire.” The charity celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and took over the building, owned by the Alloa Day Home Trust, in June. Since then, the three existing flats to the rear of the property have been renovated creating an open and modern space, perfect for those with mobility issues and wheelchairs.

Chairman of Play Alloa, Bob Davis, added: “A lot of hard work has gone into creating our new home, but seeing the final result makes it all worth it.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us in our efforts, especially those who have volunteered to give their spare time to help.” Exciting new plans to build a timber framed Games Room were also unveiled at the grand opening and the chairman thanked all the companies who are donating materials and their skills to help construct the new area this autumn.
