THE final St Andrew"s Day celebration at Alva Academy on Friday was packed with memories, achievements - and press-ups.

With the newly-built Alva Academy due to open in the next few weeks the event gave past and present pupils the chance for one last look round the current school building and to celebrate academic and sporting success.

Former school duxes - from as far back as 1943 - and sporting champions were presented with awards from Radio Scotland presenters John Beattie and Katie Still.

The school made its largest donation to charity, with a music display and an impromptu press-up competition completing the celebration.

Ann Noble and William Tainsh, school duxes from 1943 and 1947 respectively were delighted to be at the ceremony.

Mr Tainsh, former headteacher at Sauchie"s Deerpark Primary, told the Advertiser he had been impressed with the musical display which included bagpipes, fiddles and guitars.

He added, 'It"s uplifting to see the difference between then and now, from rather humble beginnings 50 years ago to the individual accomplishments of today.'

Ms Noble said, 'It is a very noticeably different atmosphere from many moons ago when I was here. I would say it was much more relaxed now.'

A special presentation was made to Callum Harrower from the Scottish Qualifications Authority for achieving 100 per cent for Higher Maths last year.

While presenting those who had achieved at sports, former Scottish rugby internationalist John Beattie challenged six time Scottish junior gymnastics champion, Chris Chalk, to a press-up competition.

A tired and defeated John later said, 'He won easily, losing at press ups is worse than losing to England at rugby.'

At the gathering a cheque for £7412 was presented to Macmillan Cancer Care - the largest cheque ever presented by Alva Academy and the largest to be received by Macmillan from a school so far this year.
