A RETIRED Alloa teacher has been recognised for her many years of work in the community in the New Year Honours List.
Former Park Primary School teacher Margaret Fish is to be awarded an MBE for services to education and to the community.
Recipients of an Honour are normally informed by letter prior to the official announcement - but a missing number on Margaret"s address almost meant it was one of her neighbours planning a trip to Buckingham Palace instead of her!
Margaret told the Advertiser, 'You are sent a letter in strict confidence at the end of November but mine went to the wrong address so I was quite lucky to get it.
'It was a surprise and it is quite exciting to be honoured in this way.'
Margaret retired in the summer after spending 36 years - her entire teaching career - at the school.
She said, 'I see it as an honour for the whole school - staff, children and parents - and not just for one person. It"s for everyone.
'I still go back to the school to do bits and pieces and over the years you get to know the families.
'It is a really nice thing to teach the sons and daughters of your old pupils but having taught their grannies makes you feel old.'
Her date in London to meet the Queen has still to be finalised but it will happen in the next six months.
Margaret continued, 'It hasn"t really sunk in yet but I hope to be going down with my family to the palace.'
