Pupils at Tillicoultry Primary weigh out their crop of potatoes.

PUPILS at Tillicoultry Primary have been tattie howkin' after taking part in a national 'Count and Grow' project.

The project, run by the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) and sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, encourages children to have some hands-on experience of growing a crop while developing their numeracy skills.

Pupils up and down the country have been harvesting the potato crops they planted in February, and local farmer Jane Cullens joined the P3 and P4 classes at Tillicoultry Primary as they counted and weighed their potatoes.

Jane said, "The children took part in the 'Growing potatoes in a pot' competition. They planted an early variety 'Swift' potatoes in February and now we've been able to harvest them."

Tillicoultry was one of 411 schools to participate in this year's competition.

In addition to submitting the weight of potatoes grown, schools have to prepare a project book outlining the measuring and weighing at different stages of growth - part of developing maths and information technology skills and learning about biology.

Judges will assess the crop weights and workbooks, and the winners are due to be announced in early July.
