COMMONWEALTH gold medallist Steve Frew was in Lornshill Academy last week to inspire pupils to be the best they can be.

As part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme the former gymnast was in the school on Wednesday to talk to pupils in S4, S5 and S6 about making the most of their talents.

Although from Grangemouth, Steve spent many years training at the gymnastic club in Alloa.

He spoke to the students about the work he was required to put in during his 23 year career and showed a video of some of his performances. Steve also gave a demonstration on some of the school's gymnastic equipment.

He told the Advertiser, "I am trying to use my story to inspire the pupils to be the best they can be.

"It is great to be here, I used to train at the Speirs Centre with the coach Tan Jia En for many years and I used to represent Alloa. I am really pleased to be here sharing my experiences. If one child hears something that inspires them it has been a success."

Steve added, "We have had really good feedback and had lots of questions. I think it is good that they can see I'm from nearby and have trained at places they know."

Gareth Kirk, Lornshill's principal teacher of pupil support for the More Choices More Chances programme, explained that the visit was part of a scheme to help pupils who may be disillusioned with school.

As they reach the end of their time at Lornshill it is hoped that those who may be less academic than others will realise they can make the most of the talents they have.

Gareth added, "The fourth years have gone out and taken on outdoor education programmes such as hill walking or abseiling. This is the end of the programme and they are set to sit their exams, Steve is here to round everything off.

"He is showing what you can achieve if you set your mind to things."
