Successful season for Lornshill's footballers
LORNSHILL Academy U15s football team ended the 2010/11 season runners-up in the Forth Valley Schools Final.
The boys played well but were unable to get passed Denny High School and went down by two goals.
Despite this it marked the end of a successful season that also saw them make the last 16 of the Scottish Cup.
Acting Headteacher Jackie Dunlop said, "They've given us a lot to be proud of. I was especially impressed with the reports of the boys' sportsmanship and good humour, even when they knew the game was lost. That's the kind of attitude we love to see."
The boys were presented with commemorative t-shirts to mark their achievement in reaching the final before travelling to Ochilview, home of Stenhousemuir FC, last Wednesday.
The match started well for the Lornshill side, captained by Jay Simpson. Midfield quartet of Liam Spears, Lewis Gillan, Shuan McKeown and Shuan Brennan took control in the middle of the park and played some nice balls forward allowing strikers Kyle Horne and Connor Pearson to stretch the Denny defence.
However, the Denny defence proved strong and as the Stirlingshire side began to get more into the game Lornshill's back four of Max Evans, Jay Simpon, Chris Hislop and Daniel Stoyanov were made to work hard to keep them at bay.
At half time the game remained scoreless and Lornshill made two changes to the midfield, bringing on Connor Johnstone and David Goldie.
As the second half progressed Lornshill keeper Scott McNie was forced into a few 'world-class' saves from long range pile-drivers but was unable to prevent Denny from taking the lead.
After scoring, Denny sat back and Lornshill made further changes bringing on Ross McConnell and Murray Dewar as they chased for an equaliser. With five minutes remaining Horne struck a fantastic free kick from 25 yards that was bound for the top corner were it not for the outstretched arms of the Denny keeper. Gillan then hit the bar before Denny broke forward and scored their second in injury time.
Teacher and coach Barry Mills said, "The Lornshill team were well supported with a number of parents attending the game as well as a coach load of S3 pupils who provided lots of encouragement to both the Lornshill players and coaching staff throughout the game.
"A special mention must be made to Lornshill's biggest supporter of the day, Kyle Dickson, who was unfortunately injured during the weekend prior to the game and was unable to play."
Mr Mills and Mr Main would like to thank all the players, parents and supporters of the school team this year and look forward to seeing everyone again next season.
