ALVA Academy offered up cakes and hot drinks to support Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday.

The secondary school held its annual charity extravaganza that saw members of the public and pupils feast on baking, buy handmade jewellery and crafts at almost 20 stalls, and indulge in a coffee or tea.

Last year it raised more than £25,000 combined with other fundraising activities, and became the first school in the UK to raise more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support over consecutive years.

Pupils had already dared themselves again with challenges, from bungee jumps and abseils to kayaking the length of the Ochil Hills, to raise cash for the charity. Some brave male pupils even put themselves through the torture of leg waxing on the day of the coffee morning.

So far a staggering £21,000 has been raised and more is expected from an upcoming Hillfoots Music for Youth concert at the school (5 October) and a celebratory ceilidh for supporters.

Teacher David Clifford, who is on the charities committee, said, “It was an unbelievable day. The generosity of the public was simply phenomenal and the more people come the more publicity for Macmillan.” He thanked parents and local businesses for donations of prizes to the raffles and competitions.

Elsewhere, Burnside Hall in Dollar held a coffee morning and Clackmannan Primary School raised £515 from its event which included a cake sale and ‘guess the number of hundreds and thousands’ competition.
