Two Dollar Academy girl hockey teams travelled to Newcastle to play practice matches against local clubs gaining valuable experience over the Easter break.

Girls from FIII visited south of the border to play against teams from The Newcastle Royal Grammar School and Tynemouth Hockey Club getting a great deal of skills and practice. The A team won both of their games, while the B girls won one, but were defeated in the other despite playing very well.

After the A team won their first match 1 – 0 against RGS on the Friday, PE teacher Ms Davidson said: “This was a tough game with many opportunities for each side; however, the Form III girls once again showed their determination and class, scoring an excellent goal built up through open play and finished off by Ellie Towers.” The B girls had to work very hard for their 2 – 1 win in a gritty match against the RGS B side, but as the PE teacher added: “with super performances from all players, they managed to pull together as a team to pick up the final goal to give them the win”.

Saturday’s games against the Tynemouth sides were completely different to the previous day’s matches. With a final score of 9 – 0, the A team stomped the game in an impressive win.

However, the B players were less fortunate suffering a 2 – 0 loss, but their “team spirit never faltered and the girls played with ferocity until the final whistle”, added Ms Davidson, who was pleased with the performances of all the girls.

The matches were scheduled for the mornings on both days, leaving downtime in the afternoons. A trip to the famous Metro-Centre in Gateshead allowed the girls to hit the shops and relax. A lovely meal and bowling followed on Saturday evening.

On Sunday, the teams were honoured to experience a coaching session run by One Hockey, which delivers first class training around the UK. The session was delivered by experienced players and trainers who are involved in coaching England U18 boys and girls.

A session in the morning offered a wide array of valuable coaching tips and advice and the girls also benefited from a video session when they watched the positive moments from the weekend’s matches and also identified areas where they need to improve.

Summing up the successful trip, Ms Davidson concluded: “The girls represented the school excellently and showed off what Dollar Hockey Club has been developing over the last few years.” Two Dollar Academy girl hockey teams travelled to Newcastle to play practice matches against local clubs gaining valuable experience over the Easter break.
