In a tense and thrilling contest, Dollar Academy’s 1st XI clinched an important win in the first round of the Independent Schools T20 Cup recently.

The cricket team went head-to-head against last year’s champions Fettes College and won by seven wickets thanks to a dominating performance by in-form batsman Calum Weir (FVI) in Edinburgh earlier in May.

As the Dollar bowling lacked penetration early on, the Fettes side reached an impressive 137 in eight overs, but the opening stand was put down by a Toby Douglas (FII) wicket.

Some tight fielding and improved “at the death” bowling prevented the Edinburgh players from reaching a total of 150 – the last over, bowled by Lachlan Peterson (FIV) only saw five runs scored.

The Dollar innings got off to a confident start with Kyle Hinkson and Ben Pearson (FIV) reaching 50 before Ben was caught after a mistimed drive over mid-off. Ben was replaced by Calum Weir who proceeded to hit two excellent on and off drives for four.

The batting pair continued to accumulate runs even after the untimely run-out of Kyle on 40. Then, Harry Warr (FV) hit a towering six over long off and, after Euan Dawtrey (FVI) holed out, harry continued to run chase.

With two overs left, Dollar beat the Fettes side with Calum on 42 not out.
