STUDENTS from Alloa Academy attended this year’s Royal Highland Show thanks to funding from SP Energy Networks.

Working in partnership with the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET), SP Energy Networks offered schools from across Scotland the opportunity to attend the country’s largest agricultural show through its new travel fund programme.

Schools were presented with significant funding towards travel costs.

Over 300 young people visited the four-day event between Thursday 18 June and Sunday 21 June through the funding programme.

Ewan McMillan, director of health and safety at SP Energy Networks, said: “SP Energy Networks is committed to engaging with young people to offer valuable experiences, particularly in the classroom or through education.

“By offering schools vital funding we can give children the chance to visit this fantastic show, which might not have been possible otherwise, while also educating them about the potential dangers that are associated with electrical equipment through PowerWise. This is hugely important as these lessons will help to keep people safe for many years to come.” As part of the visit, the school children also got to learn all about electricity and how to stay safe around it at the SP Energy Networks stand.

Through an interactive safety trail, new for 2015, students were taught about electricity through the use of a giant buzz-wire and they also got to witness a pyrotechnic display, which shows the devastating consequences of machinery hitting an overhead power line.

The trail is part of SP Energy Networks’ award winning safety education programme: PowerWise, which is provided to schools free of charge.

The programme has been visiting schools up and down the country for over a decade and has now visited more than 2,390 Primary Schools in areas served by SP Energy Networks.
