TWO men have been arrested and charged for trying to swindle a Menstrie pensioner with a shoddy work scheme.

It is alleged the duo approached the woman at her home address and offered to carry out work on her garden.

She agreed, however, police say the work carried out was both "substandard and vastly overpriced".

Similar incidents are also said to have occurred recently in Dollar, Coalsnaughton and Alloa.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "It is a sad fact of life that some criminals will carry out such despicable crimes, praying on vulnerable people throughout the community.

"Unfortunately, this type of crime does occur with bogus callers varying in appearance and using a number of excuses to try and trick their way into people’s homes.

"We are asking you to look out for any family, friends or neighbours who may be having gardening work done or even just thinking about it, to check that they are alright and most importantly are not dealing with this trader.

"If no paperwork is given upfront when the contract is agreed, criminal offences are being committed and it is highly likely that the trader is not reputable. Remember if in doubt keep them out."

Police have reported the two men to the procurator fiscal in Alloa in relation to an attempted fraud. They will appear in Alloa Sheriff Court in the near future.
