THERE was plenty of excitement at the superhero themed Alva Community Fun Day at the weekend.

Donned in an array of wonderful costumes, around 150 joined Elsa, Anna, Moanna, Ariel, Spiderman and Ironman for a musical parade.

Leaving from Brook Street, they travelled along the A91 to the Cochrane Park where the event was being held, led by classic cars and the Tartan Juggler.

Town centre bollards were also transformed into superheroes, while community-made bunting and colourful hanging baskets added a nice touch.

The fun-filled annual event, now in its fourth year, boasted of something for all the family and there was a huge range of activities.

A spokesperson from Alva Community Council said: "This year’s theme was chosen to bring our community together to celebrate the courage, strength and hope that superheroes represent.

"The camaraderie was amazing and we want to send a huge thanks to the approx 800 people who were present as well as the volunteers who helped on the day.

"Their participation was greatly appreciated and made the event a massive success."

The afternoon brought bouncy castles, a slide, roller coaster simulator, kick darts, trampolines, rides for children and face-painting.

There was also owl magic, tombola, refreshments, motorbikes, a fire engine and mountain rescue.

In addition, people could browse a number of stalls and enjoy the local food outlets.

Meanwhile Gordon Best, a classic car owner, collected £69.54 for Strathcarron Hospice.

He drove his 57-year-old Rover 1500 miles from Paisley to Monte Carlo in the Classic Car Rally at the beginning of the year, for his late wife.

Residents also have the opportunity to enter competitions as part of the event, such as the town centre bollard contest.

There was a £50 prize for the winner and judges were faced with nine impressive entries.

This year the Bollard Competition Shield was given to Wee County Crafters for their Spiderman creation.

Also picking up a winning cup and £10 were: Robbie Robertson with 'Hugh Cucumber' (Veggie Superhero, children up to eight), Jessica McIvor (Recycled Superhero, children over eight) and Rita Shaw (Outfit for your little Superhero, adult).

The fun day was made possible thanks to an application for a grant from EDF Burnfoot Hill Community Fund.

Next year's event will be held on Saturday, May 26.
