THE first meeting of Clackmannan’s sing-along group, Thankful for the Music, brought tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

On Friday, May 18, around 12 people of all ages come together to stretch their vocal chords and those with extra time stayed on for lunch at Bargains and Bites.

The idea for the community-based sing-along came from partnership meetings that explored how to become more dementia friendly.

The Clackmannan Development Trust, the community garden project, town hall trust, health centre, church and local councillor, Kathleen Martin, all liked the idea of a sing-along, especially with numbers from earlier eras.

Bonnie McDowell, dementia support development coordinator for Presbytery of Stirling, has also been involved and encourages sing-along sessions for everyone, everywhere.

She said: “Even if people don't feel they are good at singing, listening to music together, and singing along too can be a fun experience and can spark off lots of memories and stories.

“We experienced that on Friday with a wide range of songs. The sunny day seemed apt for singing 'Summer Holiday' by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, which prompted some joyful singing and smiles, and then some stories about where people went to see the film Summer Holiday when it was released back in the sixties.

“A rendition of Andy Stewart's We're No Awa' tae Bide Awa' resulted in a jig from people preparing for Bargains and Bites.”

Music and singing can be a good experience for anyone of any age, and stage of life and can be particularly helpful for people who might have difficulties with their memory.

Cllr Martin said: "I hope this becomes a regular event in Clackmannan.

“I think the sing-along sessions have the potential to be uplifting and life-enhancing for anyone who goes along.

“Music is a good stress-buster, but it also has great benefits for those with memory problems, where a song can reawaken a personal memory.

“It can be a good day out also, the sing-along then a visit to Bargains and Bites."

Two more dates have been arranged for over the summer, Friday, June 29, and Friday, July 27, from 11am-noon in Clackmannan Town Hall.

Bargains and bites will be off for a well-earned rest, but there will be tea and scones.
