Street name tribute to road accident victim
A CLACKMANNANSHIRE couple have been greatly moved by a council decision to name a street after their son.
At Thursday's planning committee meeting, councillors agreed to the tribute to Kevin Kippen (21), who was tragically killed in a car accident near Dunfermline last year.
A new Sauchie street will be called Kippen Place.
Provost Derek Stewart said it was a fitting tribute to the family and that Kevin was a "well respected youngster in a well respected community".
Councillor Gary Womersley, who endorsed the naming, said afterwards, "I'm pleased for personal reasons.
"Kevin is the same age as my oldest son, Brad. They went to school together and went fishing together.
"We attended his funeral and have known Mary and Billy for years.
"I also recommended it because it's what the community would have wanted. It's only appropriate there's some recognition."
Kevin's parents, Mary and Billy, were left devastated over the loss of their only child.
When Mary found out that the council were accepting suggestions for naming the street, she recommended Kippen Drive in memory and is absolutely delighted Kippen Place has been chosen.
Speaking to the Advertiser, Mary said, "Never in a million years did I think we would get it. I drive past it every day on my way to work.
"I think it's brilliant because the street will carry on Kevin's name. It's really lifted our spirits."
Kevin, who went to Craigbank Primary School and then left Lornshill Academy to obtain an SVQ in Business Management and Retail Sales Profession, worked full-time at Beatsons.
Mary said, "All he wanted to do was work.
"He loved working at Beatsons and he was very well thought of there."
Billy added, "He also loved music and liked going to the gym with his pal Ben."
In memory of Kevin two football matches have been held in Fairfield Park between The Golden Oldies and Young Yins, organised by The Oakwood.
In 2010, £2661 was collected for Yorkhill Children's Hospital and £250 for Dogs Trust, and in 2011, £2570.61 was raised for road safety charity Brake.
Billy said, "Brake were with us from the start. They keep you right and have been really excellent."
An additional £100 was gifted to Brake from Billy's workmates as well as £500 to Dogs Trust from Kevin's funeral collection.
Mary said, "We would like to thank everyone who made it possible for us, but especially Provost Stewart and Councillor Gary Womersley."
Billy added, "We would also like to thank all the community for their support."
Mary and Billy plan to hold another memorial event next year and will continue to donate to various charities.
