Community council areas altered by boundary changes
CLACKMANNANSHIRE Council is looking for new community councils following the approval of a new scheme.
At a recent meeting, councillors authorised the third stage of a lengthy consultation period in which the public were invited to make suggestions on the boundaries and the composition of community councils.
Due to the changes in the current establishment, when the new boundaries come into force next year, Alloa Centre, Alloa West, Bowmar, Fishcross/Coalsnaughton/Devonside, Sauchie and Tillicoultry community councils areas will cease to exist.
In January the council will publish a public notice announcing the adoption of the new scheme and invite electors in areas where there is no community council to apply and create one.
The areas will now be Alloa, Alva, Clackmannan, Dollar, Menstrie, Muckhart, Tillicoultry/Coalsnaughton/Devonside, Sauchie/Fishcross and Tullibody/Cambus/Glenochil.
Community councils work with the local authority and other public bodies to determine, co-ordinate and express the views of the area it represents.
It is an opportunity to play an important role in promoting the well-being of neighbourhoods, to develop community spirit, and to inform residents matters of public concern.
Provost Derek Stewart said, "The consultation process highlighted how important it is that the public participate in the business of community councils and the election process.
"We have quite a good distribution of community councillors across Clackmannanshire but there is a tremendous opportunity now for people in all areas of the county to become involved and take an active role in issues that affect their local communities."
Les Sharp, chair of Menstrie Community Council, added, "People can see what a community council does when they come to a village gala, take part in a social event or enjoy the open spaces we manage.
"But we have influence over other important aspects of community life.
"Our community council, for example, has been the main protagonist in improvements to the Dumyat Centre through dialogue and work with Clackmannanshire Council.
"So when I'm asked 'Why would anyone join a community council? Why would you bother? Why would you spend your own free time with it all?', the simple answer is because you can make a difference."
