Tullibody set to turn Parisien...
TULLIBODY could be the new Paris, according to a local councillor.
Independent Archie Drummond said the village could be transformed into the romantic French capital with the passing of an outdoor drinking area.
He made the claim as the Licensing Board discussed plans on Thursday for a seated area outside The Inn - which was eventually
given approval subject to certain conditions.
Pub owners had applied for a drinks licence in space directly in front of the Main Street premises.
Mr Drummond offered his support to the introduction of a "Parisian cafe culture" to the village.
He said, "I am pleased that someone is trying to create the environment of the type I have got used to in say Paris or Tillicoultry. It's an absolutely splendid environment for a cafe."
The councillor further dispelled any concerns that the outdoor area may cause unacceptable noise in
the village.
Councillor Kenny Earle expressed his concern of the outdoor area in relation to the nearby Abercromby Primary School.
He said, "I understand where my colleague is coming from but I think the school is too close."
It was in response to a report by Licensing Standards Officer Paul Fair which warned that the area may increase public nuisance due to it being in "such a public and exposed location".
Mr Fair also expressed concerns that the staff would be unable to monitor the consumption of alcohol outdoors.
He said, "It is perfectly reasonable that persons could enter and leave this area totally unobserved by staff.
"It will be impossible for staff to control who alcohol is being supplied to in this area, and it would be relatively easy for persons under the age of 18 to enter this area and consume alcohol unnoticed by staff."
However a representative from the pub said the designated area would operate between 11am and 7pm and is continually monitored by CCTV cameras.
Tracey Baxter of The Inn said, "The area is covered 24/7 by a camera. My staff are trained above and beyond the training required. We are looking to promote a family friendly environment."
The board approved the licence, after a short adjournment, subject to the conditions that the outdoor area would be table service only and
supervised at all times.

Report commentIf you read the quite he likens the idea to both Paris and Tillicoultry. I think as soon as he said it he felt mentioning Paris was over the top, and so added Tillicoultry to bring the idea back down to earth.

I can just visualise now, the local demi monde, strolling the boulevards around The Inn, at midnight, champagne glasses in hand, tiaras gleaming in the moonlight, while inhaling the gentle scent of the locally grown bougainvillea!

Report commentC'mon guys, while Archies comparison to Paris might be slightly off the mark, the fundamental remains i.e. why shouldn't we have a more continental approach towards our drinking and eating establishments? As long as such areas are not allowed to degenerate into drunken brawls then I think it's a benefit to both locals and visitors alike to have al-fresco areas for every pub!
