“The Queen's Baton Relay offers a unique opportunity for people across Clackmannanshire to share in the magic of the 2014 Games and we are looking forward to welcoming the baton to the county next month.” Wednesday 25 June is an opportunity for people across Clackmannanshire to be a part of the excitement, celebrations and countdown to Scotland's biggest-ever sporting and cultural festival, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and show their support for the home team.

The relay will reflect the important role of sport by visiting schools, sporting and leisure facilities, encouraging communities to get behind Team Scotland, rallying athletes as they get ready to compete for medals in Glasgow.

When it arrives in Scotland on 14 June, the baton will have been on 248-day global epic journey through all other 69 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

The 40-day journey of the baton will cover 8000 kilometres, showcasing Scotland's most-iconic landmarks and culture – local ones included are Alloa Tower, Castle Campbell and Menstrie Castle.

Community-organised events are being planned along the route including: -Picnic in the Park organised by Alloa Community Council and Sunnyside Primary School at Greenfield Park including a choir singing the Commonwealth Anthem -A street party in Mar Place outside Sauchie Hall organised by Sauchie and Fishcross Community Council, involving Craigbank and Deerpark Primary Schools, Activ8, Sauchie Parish Church and the Scouts and Brownies -A large event within the grounds of Dollar Academy involving Strathdevon Primary and the local community -A Commonwealth Village in Alva's Cochrane Park featuring a Samba band, dancers, songs from Alva Primary School pupils and 'Taste of the Commonwealth' stalls The day will culminate in a free, but ticketed, evening event for the public at Lornshill Academy which will include sport demonstrations and performances of dance and music around the athletics track.

During the day, the annual Secondary Schools Athletics Championship will take place on the track at Lornshill Academy involving pupils from S1 to S6 at Alloa Academy, Alva Academy and Lornshill Academy.

This event is the culmination of hours of athletics training and coaching in term three.
