THE naming of a new street in Alloa has been delayed after a mix-up over which constituency ward it falls into.

Council planners mistakenly thought the site of the former Clackmannan County Hospital, soon to feature 22 houses, was in the Clackmannanshire South Ward.

As part of the naming process for new housing developments, officers consult local councillors, heritage groups, schools and other ‘interested parties’.

Councillors Kenny Earle and Craig Holden responded with suggestions such as ‘Hospital Gardens’ and ‘Gillespie Court’.

Council officers recommended the approval of ‘Bryden Way’, a name suggested by the Reference Librarian and one that referenced Scottish architect, Robert Bryden, who was commissioned to design the new hospital in 1897.

However, at Thursday’s Planning Committee meeting it was discovered that the map the officers used to distinguish where the ward boundaries lay was wrongly marked and the site fell into the Clackmannanshire Central Ward. It meant officers had failed to consult the actual local councillors, Gary Womersley, Graham Watt and Derek Stewart.

To remain faithful to the naming process, the committee recommended to approve the name ‘Bryden Way’ subject to approval by the ward councillors.
