A PRISONER caught with a mobile phone and makeshift charger in Scotland’s tough Glenochil Prison dodged a further jail term on Thursday 9 October.

Steven McGregor (30) was caught after warders swept the prison with a mobile-phone detector, and found signs that there was one in his cell.

Fiscal depute Gary McMillan told the court that the phone was found on 27 September last year.

He said, “The circumstances here are that on the day in question staff at the prison were carrying out mobile phone detection.

“The device they use to do this, indicated that there was a mobile phone in the locus.

“The locus contained the accused and one other. On entering the cell, it would appear that the other inmate had thrown the phone towards the accused and told him to hide it.” McGregor, of Balmoral Drive, Glasgow, pleaded guilty to having the phone and charger in prison.

Defence solicitor Eamon Mcgeehan told the court, “It belonged to his cell mate, who subsequently admitted possession at a later date.” After reading social background reports, Sheriff David Mackie told McGregor, “I have got the impression you haven’t moved on with your life.” He sentenced him to a community payback order with 220 hours of unpaid work to be completed within 12 months.
