AN ALLOA man has been handed a £200 fine for kicking a police officer during a drunken nightclub row.

Martin Greig (35), of Churchill Street, was arrested in Klub 21 on 19 October 2014.

He pleaded guilty to acting in a threatening and abusive manner, before kicking the cop in the leg and further struggling with other officers during the incident.

Greig appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court on Thursday (19 February) for sentencing on the three charges.

Depute fiscal Ann Orr said: “Police were called to the club on an unrelated matter and observed the accused who was, in their words, ‘getting up in their faces’.

“Other officers went to speak with him and one took out her notebook and pen to take his details when he threw his phone on the floor and shouted: ‘you broke my f***ing phone.

“The officer then tried to pick the phone up when the accused lunged at her.

“As the police there tried to secure him, he kicked out and struck the officer on her leg. He then continued to struggle with the officers while shouting and uttering threats of violence towards them.” She added: “Once he was sobered up, he apologised for his actions and told the police his behaviour was not normal for him.” Greig, who spoke on his own behalf in court, said he had taken no issue with the charge except that he dropped the phone when the police officer grabbed his arm.

He said: “The whole situation is completely out of character for me and I think it was due to the excess alcohol I had consumed.

“But that is not an excuse, it is only a reason.

“I apologised to the officer again when I spoke to her on the Sunday evening. I didn’t even realise I had done it until I was being charged on the Sunday morning.” Sheriff Gillian Wade took account of Greig’s submissions and fined him £200, down from £300 due to his early plea.
