A DEVONSIDE man has been given a community payback order after being caught ‘maliciously’ standing on the roof of a cop car.

James Turnbull (28), of Ochilview, caused £656 of damage to the vehicle when he climbed on top of it during a drunken night out.

He was walking along Chapelle Crescent in Tullibody when he spotted the unattended car at the side of the road.

Depute fiscal Ann Orr said: “The officers returned to their car to find the accused on top of it.

“As officers approached, he jumped down and ran off into the darkness.

“He was later traced due to a finger print he left on the car while climbing.” Sheriff Gillian Wade handed Turnbull an unpaid work order and hoped his family responsibilities would deter him from further offending.

She said: “I take account of the fact you are the main bread winner in your family at the moment and so I feel a financial penalty would impact on all within the household.

“So what I propose to do is to impose a community payback order compelling to undertaking 40 hours of unpaid work within the next three months.

“I should say that failure to comply will see you back in court when an alternative sentence can be imposed.”
