THE driver of an articulated lorry has been taken to hospital after his tanker plunged into the Gairney Burn in Powmill last night (Tuesday).

The vehicle is believed to have been travelling though the village, which sits just south of Muckhart, when the accident occurred.

It appears to have careered through the roadside barrier before toppling over the bridge and into the burn.

The driver remains in stable condition in hospital after being treated for head injuries.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that we attended at Powmill after reports that a tanker had left the road. Enquiries are ongoing.” The tanker was not carrying a load at the time of the accident; however, there are still pollution concerns from the cab.

SEPA officers were on site last night to investigate and will update the public in the near future.

Kath McDowall, unit manager with SEPA, said: "An oil spill contractor, appointed by the company, is on the way to the scene and arrangements will be put in place before the tanker is recovered later today.

“SEPA will continue to liaise with the company to ensure this work is completed appropriately.”
