THE weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those who attended Dollar Gala Day on Saturday (7 June).

Despite the dismal forecast the rain stayed off for the annual event, which allowed Dollar Academy’s Pipe Band to lead the parade to Market Place where the gala officially opened.

A whole host of activities had been organised for the day and there was something for all the family.

From raffles and run races, to stalls and a fancy dress competition, there was plenty to keep people entertained.

Community councillor Mike Robins, who was involved in putting on the gala day, said all went well – despite some initial concerns about the rain.

He said: “As an organising committee, Dollar Community Council were absolutely delighted with the day.

“Of course, we were a little bit worried with the weather forecast because it said it would be raining and it would be windy. We were nervous beforehand because we put a lot of planning in.” He added that the rain stayed off and led to a great turnout – with many members of the community enjoying the events that were planned.

During the gala Jack Murchieson and Rosie Leighton were crowned king and queen, guest of honour for the day was Jean Dunnet and Chris Hunter was Master of Ceremonies.

There was a fantastic fancy dress parade, various groups had fundraising stalls and ladies from Hillfoot Harmony manned the tea and cake stall which proved incredibly popular.

Children had turned out in a range of different costumes and characters such as The Hulk, Poison Ivy, Batman, Captain America, Darth Vader and Princess Leia could be spotted.

The only slight disappointment was that the planned air display had to be cancelled due to the clouds.

However, there was nothing but positive feedback from those who attended.

Mike said the community council was grateful to those who made the event possible.

He added: “Thank you to everyone who came along and thank you to our sponsors and volunteers – and fingers crossed for blue skies and warmer weather next year.” Fancy dress winners: - Under fives: Luke Waine (first), Rosie Taylor (second) and Kian Mitchell (third).
