The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after 18 chicks were found abandoned in woodland in Clackmannanshire.

Scotland's animal welfare charity was alerted last Monday (20 May) after a member of the public discovered the birds in a box at the back of Braehead Golf Club on Alloa Road in Cambus.

The chicks, who are estimated to be around three to four weeks old, are now in the care of the Scottish SPCA's Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Centre assistant manager Kenny Sharpe said, "A number of chicks had escaped from the box but the woman who discovered them was able to catch some and take them to safety.

"Unfortunately there were others who ran off and were unable to be located.

"If anyone comes across a chick in the area we'd ask them to contain it if they are able to and contact us for assistance.

"The chicks all seem healthy and happy now that they're in our care.

They are very active and eating well.

"We think it's possible they are maran chickens but we can't be sure as it's too early to tell if they're male or female.

"Whoever left them clearly had no concern for their welfare and we are very keen to identify the person responsible.

"We'll soon be looking to find the chicks permanent homes where they can enjoy long and happy lives."

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone who finds a chick or has information about the abandonment is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
