A SAUCHIE pensioner is recovering after being rescued by a neighbour following a slip on ice whilst walking her dog late on Friday night.
Nancy McCallum was spotted by Steven Boden (pictured right) lying on the ground with a broken ankle at Ten Acres just before midnight on one of the coldest nights of the recent bitter spell.
Steven told the Advertiser he had been preparing for bed when he looked out of his window to see what looked like someone lying motionless in the snow and ice.
The self employed landscape gardener ran outside and found Nancy freezing in the sub-zero temperatures.
In an attempt to get her off the ground Steven lifted a heavy bench from his front garden before moving the stricken woman on to it. The 34-year-old then tried to make her comfortable and warm.
Steven said, "She had been walking her dog, Nellie, when she slipped on the ice but could not move.
"I am glad I saw her because at that late hour not many people are about and few cars use the farm road to Alva. She could have lain all night."
Steven, who is originally from Manchester, then called for the paramedics and an ambulance and his prompt actions were described by neighbours as potentially life saving.
Nancy is currently recuperating in Stirling Royal Infirmary where she is being treated for a triple fracture to her ankle.
The seriousness of the situation Nancy found herself in was highlighted by reports that a woman froze to death on Sunday morning in a church yard in Carluke.
