Police in Clackmannanshire have presented Ochil View Housing Association with an award for their latest development in Sauchie which adopted crime prevention measures.
The new development of 15 houses at Baillie Court replaced a previously derelict college annex which had been an attraction for vandalism and other anti-social behaviour.
Constable Gordon Wilson, Central Scotland Police's architectural liaison officer for Clackmannanshire, said, "This award has been achieved through partnership working with Ochil View Housing and their architect Alisdair MacDuff, from McEachern McDuff Architects.
"This has ensured that the development reached the required standard set by Secure by Design.
"There are a number of benefits to achieving Secure by Design status for the police and the developer. However the main beneficiaries will be the residents of the development who will gain from living within a safer and more secure environment which has a proven record in reducing levels of crime and the fear of crime."
The Secure by Design award is an initiative to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in developing design to help reduce the opportunity for crime, fear of crime and creating a safer and more secure environment.
Research has shown that by incorporating Secure by Design measures within a development it can reduce crime by up to 70 per cent and also the fear of crime.
Teresa McNally, chairperson of Ochil View Housing Association, said, "Having been the first housing association in Scotland to have been awarded the Secure by design accolade in 1993, Ochil View is proud to have maintained such high standards of security and safety within its housing projects as shown at Baillie Court in Sauchie."
Clackmannanshire Deputy Area Commander Bob Hutchison added, "I encourage all developers and architects to contact our architectural liaison officer to discuss incorporating Secure by Design measures within new or existing developments in Clackmannanshire."
