Alva Golf Club President Stewart MacFarlane passes on his expertise to of the club's younger members.

ALVA Golf Club President Stewart MacFarlane is one of a number of coaches helping to engage Clackmannanshire school children with two of Scotland's favourite ball sports - football and golf.

He is working alongside other local coaches who are involved with both the clubgolf programme aimed at engaging primary school children with the Royal and Ancient game and the innovative schools to club initiative that links schools and local sports associations.

As part of that, Stewart, a coach with Alva Swifts Youth FC, is currently delivering football coaching sessions at Alva Primary with fellow Swifts man Mark Murphy.

He told the Advertiser Sport, "I've been taking coaching sessions at Alva Primary where headteacher Craig Rennie has been great in supporting what we are trying to do.

"It's not heavy and is aimed at giving the kids fun - girls and boys. The kids just love it."

And to help boost the popularity of golf the Alva President is working with fellow Wee County birdie hunter, Gregor Johnson. Both are going to take the Level 1 coaching certificate licensed by the Professional Golf Association (PGA) through the clubgolf scheme.

The clubgolf programme was launched in 2003 to fulfil the Scottish Government's promise to provide every child in the country with an opportunity to experience golf - as part of the country's commitment to the game which formed part of the successful bid to host the 2014 Ryder Cup.
