BISHOP Vincent Logan officially opened St Mungo's Primary School in Alloa in 1985 - and 25 years on he was back to celebrate the school's silver anniversary.

The Bishop was joined by school chaplain Father Michael Milton and Father Mike Freyne, of St Bernadette's, as he celebrated mass in the school with pupils and staff both past and present.

Many of the pupils participated in the mass, giving readings and bidding prayers, and taking part in the offertory, while Aidan Taggart (P1) and Alexis Graham (P2/3) made a special presentation to Bishop Logan.

Among the gifts presented to the Bishop was a framed picture which featured self portraits of all the pupils in the school.

It was a warm, friendly and enjoyable occasion, and headteacher Alice Dunphy was rightly proud of the roles the pupils played in celebrating the school's silver jubilee.

She told the Advertiser, "It was a wonderful occasion and a really successful day, and we were delighted to welcome Bishop Logan to our school once again.

"Bishop Logan was very complimentary about all the pupils, and was particularly delighted with the excellent readings in the mass.

"We had a big display on the history of the school which brought back many memories for the former teachers and staff who joined us to celebrate mass.

"It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion and we are now looking forward to the many other events we have planned to mark our silver jubilee."

Already, towards the end of last year, St Mungo's pupils planted five silver birch trees to mark the 25th anniversary.

A former pupil has made a time capsule which will be filled with memorabilia and buried at some point in the near future, and there are plans to hold a race night as well as a fun day for the children.

There will also be a special ceilidh - Hoolie in the Hall - on Saturday 23 May to which former pupils are invited.

The memory gallery will also be on display at this event, giving everyone a chance to reminisce about their school days.

Further details about the ceilidh are available from the school.
