Two of Kincardine's high rise blocks of flats will be demolished on Sunday.
THE demolition of two tower blocks of flats in Kincardine will take place this Sunday.
Built in the 1960s, Sandeman and Kincairne Courts will be nothing more than a pile of rubble after they are brought down in a controlled blast.
Residents who live within the exclusion zone have been contacted directly and will be evacuated from their homes between 8am and 9.30am - the exact time of the demolition will be determined on the day.
A number of nearby roads and footways will also be affected by the work in and around the safety zones. The actual sections to be closed will be decided upon at the weekend by police and contractors to ensure the safety of the public.
The demolition will be carried out under strictly controlled conditions with safety and technical personnel in attendance. A great deal of dust will be blown through the air from the collapsing buildings and people are advised to avoid the area completely, if possible.
It is expected that the exclusion zone will be uplifted and access to the closed roads and footpaths will be re-opened around one hour after the demolition takes place.
William Sinclair, from Safedem Ltd, the company Fife Council have contracted to carry out the demolition work, said, "We are delighted with the progress we have made on site in preparing these buildings for demolition.
"Our teams are putting the final plans into place and we are ready for Sunday's operation.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Kincardine for their kind co-operation during our preparations."
The third block, Ramsay Court, will remain for the time being and currently homes some of the former residents from the other towers. Ramsay Court will be demolished once new housing on the site becomes available.
Phase one of the project will see Kingdom Housing Association build 65 properties in the area.
Councillor Brian Goodall, chair of the Housing and Communities Committee, added, "One of the Council's big priorities is increasing access to housing and the redevelopment of the area will play a big part in delivering on that priority in the next few years.
"The demolition of these two blocks of flats is an exciting and significant part in the redevelopment of the area.
"I know Safedem have been working very hard over the past few months to ensure the needs of those people affected on the day are catered for in the best way possible."
Detailed evacuation information for residents has been issued to those affected directly and is also available at www.fifedirect.org.uk/kincardineflats
