Two of the cats were Persian, one had suffered cuts when someone tried to shave it.

THREE cats squashed inside a carrier have been saved from harm after being found dumped at the side of a road near Dollar.

The Scottish SPCA - Scotland's animal welfare charity - was called to rescue the cats on after a local resident discovered the cat carrier sitting on the driveway of Thorn Farm on the A91 between Dollar and Muckhart.

Two female grey Persian cats and one male semi-long haired black and white cat were found cramped inside the carrier.

The cats are now being cared for at one of the charity's animal rescue and rehoming centres at Milton in Dumbarton.

Scottish SPCA ambulance driver Jennifer Hamilton said, "The cats were in an okay condition overall but someone had attempted to shave one of the Persians and had done a poor job of it as the cat had several nicks and cuts on its body. This may have been done because it was matted.

"All three were inside the cat carrier which had been cable tied shut to stop them escaping.

"The A91 is a busy route between Dollar and Muckhart and whoever abandoned the cats may have expected them to be found quite quickly, but that does not excuse what they have done.

"Abandoning an animal is a serious offence and we're very keen to hear from anyone who recognises the cats or knows how they came to be found at the roadside."

Anyone found guilty of abandoning an animal can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life. Anyone with information relating to the cats should contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
