Haney boy killed in street attack

THE grandson of notorious drug dealer Mags Haney was killed on Sunday.

It is understood that Barry Bradley sustained fatal injuries after he was attacked with a broken bottle on the streets of Alva.

The 18-year-old was found by paramedics in the Dalmore Drive and Nethergate area of the town at 6.30pm.

He was taken to Stirling Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

His mother Catherine Haney, also known as 'Crackers', was informed of his death while in custody after she had been arrested on an outstanding warrant the day before.

A 19-year-old male appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court yesterday (Tuesday) charged with Barry's murder.

The teenager appeared alongside a 23-year-old who was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A close friend said, "The whole family are in a state of shock. They are feeling anger, frustration.

"It's like they don't know how to deal with this. They are all used to crime and being locked up but have never been on the receiving end.

"Now it's happened on their door step they don't know how to cope."

The incident has shocked the Hillfoots town, where Mags Haney was placed after she was released from Cornton Vale prison last year, and many residents fear reprisals.

Haney rose to prominence when she led a campaign to oust paedophiles living in the Raploch area in Stirling where she stayed during the late 1990s.

But she was later exposed as a heroin dealer and sentenced to 12 years behind bars. Several members of her family were also jailed for drug offences.

While inside, she was struck down with cancer but made a recovery.

Since her release in June last year there have been several isolated incidents involving the Haney clan in Clackmannanshire. In some of those cases they have been the victims rather than the perpetrators.

It is believed that Barry had been staying with his twin sister Michaela at their grandmother's home at the time of his death.

Alva Community Council secretary George Horsburgh said, "It is absolutely horrendous that someone is killed, regardless of the circumstances."

Police cornered off both streets for several days to undertake forensic work and carry out door to door enquiries.

A local resident said, "You don't really expect something like that to happen in a small place like Alva but it's a sign of the times I suppose."

A concerned resident added, "They (the Haneys) are all congregating in the high street and at the accused's home.

"Word on the street is that they have put out threats of revenge. People are just bracing themselves waiting for what's going to happen next."

Floral tributes, including one with a note from Mags, and a Celtic FC top signed by his family adorn a fence in the street where Barry was attacked.

The note from Mags read, "To a lovely grandson. Love and miss you always. Nana Mags xxx".

Jack Cramb (19) of Alva appeared on petition at Alloa Sheriff Court yesterday (Tuesday) charged with murder. He appeared alongside Brent Fairley (23), also of Alva, who was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. They made no plea or declaration and both men were remanded in custody.
