A NEW chapter is opening on recycling in Clackmannanshire - householders can turn unwanted books into cash for charity and collectors ACE Recycling hope it will be a 'best seller'.
The local council is now adding books to its popular kerbside blue box recycling scheme along with the glass bottles, jars and small electrical equipment.
Unwanted clothes can be put in the textile bag and placed on top of the blue box.
Malcolm McArdle, managing director of ACE, said, "I'm delighted that with the help of Clackmannanshire Council we've been able to extend the range of materials we can collect through the blue box scheme to include old books.
"Most people have old books lying around their house and it can be awkward knowing what to do with them. We can now take these away in the blue box, and at least 70 per cent of the money raised will be ploughed back into local charities.
"People can still donate their cans, plastic bottles, paper and card by dropping them off at our warehouse in Greenfield Street, Alloa and take part in our Cash for Communities project," said Malcolm.
"We have returned almost £1000 to local community groups and charities in the last three months by giving cash to communities for the recyclable items we receive."
He added, "If people need more blue boxes or a special delivery of textile bags for a big clearout they just need to call us and we'll deliver. We're a local charity and we want to make a difference to local groups, which is why we launched the Cash for Communities service. We want to keep putting more back and it's great to think we're taking an old book and turning into cash for local groups.
"We'll be watching how the book recycling goes but we hope it will be a best seller!"
Councillor Eddie Carrick, portfolio holder for sustainability, said, "Clackmannanshire Council has one of the best recycling rates in the country thanks to kerb side recycling and I'm delighted that we're extending this popular service even further."
