Little time to nominate your Citizen of the Year
THERE is just over a week to go to get your nominations in for Clackmannanshire Council's Citizen of the Year 2011.
The closing date is Friday 20 January and the eighth recipient of the prestigious award will be named at a ceremony held in Alloa Town Hall on Thursday 23 February.
Current title holder Anna Forbes, who was recognised for her involvement over many years in various community groups, said, "It was a surprise to be nominated. I got the shock of my life when I got it. I'm always busy, but the new winner will probably find themselves with invitations to a lot more events."
Those that have given their time and energy on a voluntary basis to benefit the local community are eligible to apply. Previous candidates can also be re-elected.
Provost Tina Murphy said, "It is the unsung heroes we are looking for, people who have dedicated themselves to helping others but who may have had little or no recognition.
"Nominees don't have to be well known or involved in high profile events, as long as their efforts benefit local people.
"I know that there will be a lot of people in Clackmannanshire deserving of this award and this is the perfect opportunity for others to highlight their efforts."
Once again this will be a joint event with Clackmannanshire Arts Forum and Clackmannanshire Sports Council with three different categories of award - Citizen of the Year, Sports Council Awards and Arts Forum Awards. For the first time the council's staff awards will be presented on the night and the event will also recognise activities between local businesses and schools over the past year through the Enterprise in Education - Determined to Succeed awards.
The main Citizen of the Year award will be sponsored by the Lord Lieutenant's Trust. A panel of judges made up of Trustees of the Lord Lieutenant's Fund will select the finalists who will then be invited to attend the gala awards ceremony. The welcome reception will be sponsored by Diageo.
The Sports Council Awards recognise outstanding ability, dedication and achievement in sport over the past year. An award for services to sport is also handed out to an individual who has given exceptional voluntary service over many years and made a difference to sport in Clackmannanshire.
This is presented by the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils in conjunction with Sportscotland. There will also be an award for Coach of the Year, in honour of Enid Barton who served the Sports Council for more than 20 years and continues to be an honorary member.
Awards will also be given in the categories of Junior Sports Personality of the Year, Senior Sports Personality of the Year, Team of the Year & School Team of the Year, and Triumph over Adversity.
Clackmannanshire Arts Forum uses the ceremony to pay tribute to people who have enhanced the lives of others by providing guidance, talent and expertise in all forms of arts. Awards will be given in the three categories of Visual/Craft Award, Performing/Music - Individual/Band Award, and Outstanding Contribution to the Arts.
