Meggan's Commonwealth appeal
A TULLIBODY para-athlete is in with a chance of scooping thousands of pounds to help her train towards her Commonwealth dream, writes Ashleigh Burns.
Meggan Dawson-Farrell was nominated by SMS Alloa Limited, the Kumho EPC retailer in Alloa, to receive a cash donation from the Kumho Tyres' Cash for Causes campaign.
The project was launched in June, seeing the company give away more than £100,000 to deserving local charities, groups and projects, through its ECSTA Performance Centre (EPC) retail partners.
In-store voting has now closed with the results due in a couple of weeks, but the battle is on to be top of the online leader board when voting closes on 1 November.
The cause ranked top of the leader board will win an extra jackpot prize of £2,000, with the runner up receiving £1,000 - in addition to a share of the £100,000.
Meggan is currently in second place and on track to receive the runners-up prize, which will help her compete for her wheelchair racing place in the 2014 Para Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow.
The 19-year-old says it's nice knowing her friends and family have been voting, but would be even happier in first.
She said, "My running cost are approx £14,000 per year so every penny counts.
"I'm so grateful to Andy Stewart at SMS tyres for putting my name forward to be in with a chance of winning a little extra funding help."
She joked, "I only wished they sold bike tyres instead of car tyres, I might be good
for discounted ones for my race chair."
The competition runs for another few weeks and the first place prize of £2000 would go towards Meggan's racing costs for 2013.
She is asking everyone to take two minutes out of their day and vote for her, and added, "Thank you to every one who takes the time to do this. You can vote as many times as you like as long as its from a different email address."
