VOLUNTEERS from Clackmannanshire are being called upon for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Hopes are high that Scotland can emulate the highly successful army of helpers who served at the London Olympics earlier this year.

It is expected as many as 45,000 people will put their names forward for the Glasgow Games, taking place from 23 July to 3 August 2014, but it is estimated that only 15,000 volunteers will be required.

Volunteers will have to give up some of their own time for training and cover travel and accommodation costs, although there will be free public transport around the city's venues at games time.

There will be specialist roles that entail previous experience or qualifications, such as sport or first aid, but in other roles training will be provided.

The Glasgow 2014 Volunteer Centre was formally opened this week as a base for the management of online applications from prospective volunteers.

It is expected that the application process itself will begin in mid-January 2013.
