Pub chain giant JD Wetherspoon has set the opening date for its Alloa branch, ‘The Bobbing John’ for Tuesday 25 March in 46 Drysdale Street, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
On Tuesday, the chain was announced as the breakfast winner in the Men’s Health Restaurant Awards, 2014.
Men’s Health praised Wetherspoon for the quality of its ingredients in its fry-up. Its award winning sausages have less salt and fat than many supermarket bangers, all its eggs are British Lion approved and the poppy-seed bread provides more fibre and less sugar than ordinary toast.
For those with daintier appetites, the menu also offers porridge or fruit with Greek yoghurt.
In order to find the most nutritious meals on the High Street, Men’s Health joined forces with a team of experts including Nutritional Consultant to Aston Villa FC Laurent Bannock, University Lecturer in Sport Dietetics Dr Ricardo Costa, and Nutritional Scientist Christine Bailey.
The experts pored over the menus of the UK’s most popular restaurant chains and rank them on seven real-life criteria – protein quality, fat content, carb sources, salt content, sugar content, nutrient density and value for money. And Wetherpoon wasn’t the only Alloa food place to pick up an accolade, Subway was another winner, picking up the best villain award, with McDonalds also earning a commendation.
In one of the toughest categories the judges had to find forgivable fast food joints that don’t hamper fitness goals. Subway was acclaimed as the majority of its options are under 400kcal and it has worked hard to reduce salt, sugar and trans fats.
Men’s Health Editor Toby Wiseman said, “The best-laid healthy eating plans can be sabotaged by bad decisions when eating out, but Britain’s most popular restaurant chains actually offer a wealth of high-quality and tasty options.
You don’t need to stick to lettuce leaves when you’re keeping off the pounds.”
Building work on the Alloa Weatherspoon branch has been on-going since the beginning of December.
Wetherspoon chief executive, John Hutson, said, “We are looking forward to opening our new pub in Alloa and believe that it will appeal to a wide range of people and also be an asset to the town.
“Hopefully it will also act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in the town.”
The development represents an investment of more than £1 million and approximately 40-45 jobs – a mixture of part-time and full-time – will be created in the process. The unit, which was once a Poundland store, will be transformed into a traditional pub and all day dining facility.
