A keen Alloa runner is getting ready to take on his ‘final’ half marathon in his mother’s memory.

Alex Rankin (48) decided to call it a day for the 13.1 mile races in 2010 after claiming his seventh medal to focus on taking part in shorter events.

However, before he gives up half marathon running for good, he is going to complete the Bupa Great North Run 2014 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

He explained “My mother died of brain and lung cancer 10 years ago and I started running and raising money for Macmillan back then. That’s the reason I’m doing it, my inspiration.

“I set a target of £500 but I have already got £800. I have actually smashed my target but wanted to raise as much as I can for Macmillan since it’s my last race. They just do a great job.” Macmillan Cancer Support helps people, and their families, affected by cancer in a number of ways.

It funds nurses and other specialist health care professionals, builds cancer care centres, provides practical, emotional and financial support.

Alex is fundraising to give something back after the help his family received, and to allow the charity to continue with its work.

He said, “Every penny counts, Every penny matters to those who so badly need our help and support.” To donate, visit Alex’s Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/AlexGNR14
