Motorists and other residents have been warned to expect heavy snowfall in the Wee County this evening.

The Met Office forecast predicts that temperatures will drop to close to freezing, with a 90% chance of snow between much of the period from 4pm to 8pm.

Wind chill factor will make it feel like temperatures have fallen to as low as -5 to -6C.

Police Scotland have asked drivers to take precautions before they set off.

Chief Inspector Louise Blakelock of road policing said: "If you are travelling you should ensure that you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions.

"Make sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours.

"Charge your mobile phone and plan your route as well as alternative routes.

"Listen to media broadcasts especially local radio and Traffic Scotland Radio or visit www.trafficscotland.org.
