SAUCHIE resident Florence Mackenzie is one of the nominees shortlisted for this year’s Clackmannanshire Citizen of the Year Awards and ahead of the ceremony she spoke to the Advertiser about the various volunteering work she takes part in.

The 75-year-old is involved in rigorous campaigning for better housing and living conditions, improved transport and pensions not just for today’s older adults, but the future’s senior citizens. She volunteers with the Sauchie Community Group, Sauchie Pensioners and The Clackmannanshire Older Adults Forum.

Florence, who originally hails from Vista Manitoba in Canada, said she is honoured to have been nominated for the award. She added: “To have someone or a group with whom you volunteer deem that your efforts are worthy of such an accolade is wonderful.

“To be shortlisted from among so many amazing volunteers throughout the [Wee] County makes me feel very humble.

“I work with several organisations and it is their endeavours that make what I do possible. This nomination is for them.” For two years Florence was vice president of the Sauchie Community Group and then president for another two. Together with around 45 dedicated members in the organisation Florence has worked tirelessly to make the village a better place to work, live and play. The group managed to reinstate the Armistice Day Service in Sauchie and organised a Celebrate it Sauchie event in the run up to the Commonwealth Games.

She moved to the area from Canada in the year of the millennium when she married her husband Hector. She joined the Sauchie Pensioners shortly after her arrival to meet new people and make friends.

Florence is also secretary and main fundraiser of The Clackmannanshire Older Adults Forum.
