A Sauchie couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last weekend.

Bobby and Mary Johnstone met at the dance in Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow in 1965 and got married the same year in Pollok. They moved to Devonside and then Sauchie in 1966. They have three children, Robert, Martha and Elaine, as well as six grandkids.

The couple are now residents at Parklands Care Centre in Alloa and enjoyed a lovely weekend out with family to celebrate five decades of being together.

On Thursday (27 August), a day before the big anniversary, Bobby told the Advertiser: “My son is taking us to Harviestoun in Tillicoultry, and then on the Saturday we are going to go to [Devon] Park Inn.” A family dinner was also planned for Sunday to finish off the celebration.

Bobby used to work as a printer at Interbobbin, where Mary worked in the office. Bobby said: “We retired both at the same time, Mary worked on so she could retire with me.” They got a bottle of Knockando single malt whisky from the manager, but Bobby jokingly said that “it was half empty!” Bobby and Mary tied the knot at St James’ Parish Church in Glasgow. Bobby reminisced: “Reverend Currie, [the minister conducting the ceremony]. He was late in coming, this is a true story, because he had been at Ibrox, he was coming down on his motorbike with a Rangers scarf around his neck!” At the care home, staff surprised the couple with flowers and a cake before they got ready to head out and celebrate with family the next day.
