SAUCHIE’S Main Street is looking a little more vibrant this week after hardy volunteers gave the area a bit of a sprucing up.

Members of Sauchie Gardening Group, based at the Resource Centre, decorated the stretch of road with half-barrel planters, adding a bit of colour to the all-grey-look.

More than 20 will be in place by the time they finish and the team already received some welcome feedback from residents and passers-by.

The planters have been funded through generous donations, mostly to the Coffee Fund, and around five people have decided to sponsor individual half-barrels with plaques, some memorial, to be put up in the near-future.

Keith Turner, Sauchie Community Group’s facilities administrator, told the Advertiser: “People have been saying it’s made a wee difference – rather than just the tarmac, there is a bit of colour.”

Indeed, as the group were out to put in place another six of the planters, one Sauchie resident walked over to express his gratitude and vowed to safeguard the new planters.

The group hopes vandals will steer clear and appealed to residents to keep an eye on them.

Members of the group will be maintaining the plants and will put new ones in for the summer when the cold spell comes to an end.

Pupils at nearby Craigbank PS and Sauchie Nursery are also backing the idea and there are plans to get the youngsters involved in the project.

Permission to put the planters in place was given by Clackmannanshire Council with Keith and the group giving a nod of thanks for the support they have received.

In the future, the group is hoping to plant daffodils and the like around open green spaces in the area, like the one behind the Resource Centre, and are looking for more people to join their ranks.

The Sauchie Gardening Group meets every second Friday between 1pm and 3pm at the centre as part of Sauchie Community Group.
