APPLICATIONS for the current round of the EDF Energy Renewables Burnfoot Hill Community Fund closed on Monday (16 March).

It was available for local groups and organisations, with grants of up to £2000 offering support to charitable activities that enhance quality of life for local residents, contribute to vibrant, sustainable communities and promote community spirit.

One Wee County group has first-hand knowledge of how the fund can help.

Tillicoultry Allotment Association has been reaping the benefits of a grant after it received £1950 in the last round of awards.

It has allowed the group to purchase a tool and storage shed with ramped access.

Chairman Bill McMurray said: “Our allotment association had been applying for funding from various sources for just over two years. Our aim was to provide a large communal shed suitable for various groups and individuals, some using wheelchairs.

“After a number of knock backs we decided to try to go for lesser funding and go for a stepped approach. Our priority was to get a tool shed with a wide door and access for wheelchairs.

“Once this is in place we can look at a communal shed where folk can meet, shelter, chat, exchange growing tips and educate.” The fund is provided by EDF Energy Renewables, the developer and operator of the Burnfoot Hill Wind Farm.

The annual fund value will be approximately £30,000 per year (rising in line with inflation) for the next 25 years dating from 2011.

Bill added: “Thanks to EDF Energy Renewables Burnfoot Hill Fund Community Fund the first part of our dream is taking shape.

“The shed is on order and only the weather is preventing us from getting the base ready. Our pressure now is from those folk who are desperate to use the facility.

“The application process was very straightforward. An initial application form sent along with quotes and documentation that proves we are in existence.

“This was followed up with a telephone chat where it was easier to show how a simple thing like a shed can improve people’s lives.” If anyone is interested in a plot with the association contact Bill on william.mcmurray903@btinternet.com
